The Remake…of Mistake? April 18, 2008

Alright, everyone – it’s finally here. The moment of truth! HOW will the remake of one of Asian Cinema’s biggest hit, My Sassy Girl, fare in the US and will it be able to stand on its own? More importantly, will it be able to stand on its own in good terms like its counterparts? See the trailer for yourself and decide.

What’s this, you want to know more about it? You mean you didn’t throw up? I’m just kidding! Jeez.

My Sassy Girl was the very first Korean film that I saw and ultimately jumpstarted my love for Asian Cinema. People might say the Endless Love series such as Winter Sonata, or Autumn Tale started the Korean drama craze, but I say it is My Sassy Girl. A touching film that erupted out of nowhere. The opening was mild and calming, the middle simply explained but the explanation lended itself to a climax as well, and the ending wrapped everything neatly together with a giant twist that only put a smile on the viewer’s face. The brilliance of the film lies in its humourous yet touching story, and the great performance of its stars. Now with the American adaptation, how will it fare?

From the trailer, I can see that the actors are relatively new. I haven’t seen them anywhere else, but even if they have been acting for a long time their skills sure aren’t very developed. An actor must be able to do one crucial thing: say a line of dialogue as if he or she had thought it up themselve (and not a writer) and say it naturally. I don’t see that happening here from the first line spoken in the trailer. Some scenes of the movie are also changed but that is quite typical. I only question if that will help the film or destroy it. I said before that I will watch it to see how bad it will be, but now I’m a little afraid. Why? Because the America version seem so much like a chick-flick instead of just a film for everyone. And if I drag someone to watch it with me, who will?

Let’s reminesque the good times by watching the original film’s trailer. Subtitiles included.

mmm I didn’t know that~ the actors are hot compared to my sassy girl only the girl was pretty in my opinion. but mm i am being a little skeptical here but i don’t think it will be a hit here in the usa, it just a date movie, nothing huge for me plus this story *the american remake* is like a cliche story, the trailer is not appealing ~__~. but the korean version was nice, i really liked it compared to the other kmovies i’ve watched~
btw the actor is not new, if u watched the first “bring it on” with kirsten dunst he was there.

Perhaps true that the guy in My Sassy Girl (Korean version) isn’t your typical hunky male lead, but I think that works out as a plus. It wouldn’t as funny if the beautiful sassy girl is beating up some modelly guy that’s 6′ tall.

The remake makes the female lead into some kind of “psychotic” girl instead of a sassy girl. This is the kind of girl that smiles as she lit your house on fire instead of just a confident woman who isn’t afraid to act manly at times. That’s just my take.
