So I’ve been on the posting page for about…a long time.  I’m currently at the bottom of the well to say.  What I mean is I have no idea what to write about.  So, if possible, I would like some recommendations.  What are you watching these days?  What’s your favorite drama or movie (that I haven’t review yet)?  Please let me know by commenting and I will try them out because at the moment, I am kinda out of materials. ^^;

Oh where is another good drama like this one!?

A Little Bit of Everything

Hello, everyone! You’re probably tired of me saying this over and over, but again I apologize for not posting last week. My summer classes’ finals were last week and I just finished my last one today. So I finally have the rest of the summer to watch drama to my heart’s content.  Anyway, I want to start off with some drama news and then some misc stuff…

NEWS

  • The HYD movie has been out in Japan for about a month now and it is going strong.  It starts off with being in the number 1 position for three weeks!  That’s a pretty hard feet to accomplish for any film so congrats to that!  Now I’m waiting for it to make its way onto the internet so I can see it.
  • The Korean version of HYD is also on its way.  They are still looking for actors and actresses to fill the parts.  I was originally very excited for it, but after my experience with the reproduction of Honey and Clover I’m feeling hesitant in wanting to check it out.  Again, it could be done very well.  The only thing is I’ve already seen it and know the story.  I’ll only work out for me if they mix it up a little – like the Japanese Hana Kimi version.
  • I found a recent article between Oricon and singer ayaka who sang the theme song for Zettai Kareshi. The interview talks about her song “Okaeri (I”m home)” and what it represent to her, etc.  I loved the series and the song (it’s currently on repeat in my iPod) so knowing about what the song means make it even more special.

DRAMA

Not sure what all the words are, but this picture pretty much represent who the characters are.

  • I just finished watching a JDrama called Densha Otoko (Train Man).  It’s about an otaku (anime geek) who met a beautiful woman on the train and fell in love with her.  But seeing how ridiculously geeky he is, he’s worried he’ll be rejected.  So he asked around online for help and discovered a network of lonely people who slowly begin aiding him in his quest for love.  It’s a pretty cheesy drama with the “beauty and the geek” kind of storyline but…it’s based on a true story.  AND it’s pretty funny.  A review will be up shortly for it.

  • Next, I’m am checking out another JDrama called Shinigami no Ballad (The Ballad of the Death God).  It’s about a death god who goes by the name of Momo.  She is a litte different in comparison to the others in that she wants to inform her victims before they die.  This way, they can wrap up the important things in their life before they’ll be gone forever.  This is agains the law as it can alter the person’s destiny.  I’m only on episode 2 so I’m still not sure if I like it or not.

Idol Drama

July 10, 2008 rokkuramu 1 comment

For today’s post, I’m going to talk about something call “idol drama.”  This is a relatively new term for me since the first idol drama that I saw was just back in 2007.  I’ve come to recognize that this genre has been highly popularize in many Asian countries especially Taiwan and Japan.  If there’s anyone who know more about this and would like to correct me, please do so.

And so my definition for idol drama is a drama series that employs or sometime builds around its cast – in this case idols.  Idols, in my opinion on the term, are individuals who are currently the most popular in their field.  From what I’ve seen, many of them are singers who garnered many fans and shot to fame.  Their popularity and large fan base soon become incentives for directors to hire these singers to act in their drama shows.  This could sometime results in a great and fresh show with new faces for a change.  Other times, disasters spill over when these singers are unable to act.  Why?  Well, because they’re singers and have no training in acting.  So from what I’ve come to understand, idol drama are shows that showcase many idols as the main cast.  With their current popularity, the directors are hoping for a high rating to boost his or her career.

My first idol drama was Hana Kimi the Taiwanese version.  The show employed Ella from a popular girl-band group S.H.E. and Wu Zun from the group Fahrenheit.  After watching it, I was actually really pleased with it.  I think everyone did a pretty good job though there were moments were a bit of overacting occurred.  Of course, with the two main leads being from two of the most popular band at the time, the show had great ratings and reviews.  In Japan, things get a bit more interesting because their idol stars often act with well train actors as well!  So good things do happen with idol drama.  However, there are oodles of times when it does not work.  And although a lot of people might have enjoyed this show, Romantic Princess proved to be a bad example of idol drama for me.  It again showcases Wu Zun as one of the lead and Angela Chang who has been a singer for most of her career.  For this show, without a great storyline or script like Hana Kimi, the actors show their inexperience with lots of awkwardness.

As a result, recently, I’ve been looking into movies more often than drama.  In movies, directors are more invested in their actors as only great ones will be able to deliver a great story in only 1 hour or 2.  A great drama is hard to find because it’s somewhat like a really long movie.  You need good actors and a good plot to keep the show going for a long period of time.  So with idol drama being filled with mainly inexperienced actors, I’ve become reluctant in watching a lot of Taiwanese show.  However, I’ve taken a liking to Korean and Japanese drama shows who usually mesh these new actors with experienced ones on show like Kimi wa Petto and Hong Gil Dong.  Of course I’m not saying idol drama are bad either.  I think it’s great for an individual to be talented in many art forms.  However, my problem is if their endevors are to cultivate their talent or to get more money.

Zettai Kareshi – R

July 4, 2008 rokkuramu Leave a comment

Broadcast in 2008
Based on the manga series by Yuu Watase
11 Episodes
Overall Rating: A+

Main Cast:

Hayami Mokomichi – Tenjo Night
Mizushima Hiro – Asamoto Soshi
Aibu Saki – Izawa Riiko
Ueno Natsuhi – Ito Mika
Sasaki Kuranosuke – Namikiri Gaku
Maya Miki – Wakabayashi Fujiko

Zettai Kareshi (literally Absolute Boyfriend) is about a devoted robot name Tenjo Night who falls in love with his master Izawa Riiko. However, that isn’t suppose to happen. Night was originally just another electronic appliance to be use by his master however she chooses. The thought of this “appliance” actually falling in love and chooses to follow his master’s orders wasn’t part of the original concept at all. The show is a mix of hilarity and quiet thoughtfulness that bring small incites to the viewers a little at a time. In a world where many people lust after others mainly for their looks, getting a good-looking robot to fill the void sounds almost normal (note the almost). Society nowadays wants everything to be fast, even the attainment of love. The idea of doing your best to willingly win your lover’s heart seems almost ancient. Zettai Kareshi shows this kind of love story: a story about winning the heart of a girl to be your girlfriend by being an ideal boyfriend.

Update

Wow, summer is here and…I decided to torture myself and signed up for 2 summer classes.  Thankfully, they’re not too difficult, but there is so much homework.  Of course, I’m still finding time to watch drama and the likes, but that leaves little time left to write reviews (sorry!).  Hopefully, I’ll get back on track soon.

I redid a page of mine and turned it into a “Where to Watch” page.  I’ve gotten a few comments on where to watch the shows that I’ve talked about so hopefully this page will help a lot of people.  I also restart my Upcoming Review list because I didn’t have the energy to write reviews for shows that I’ve seen many years ago.

Again, thanks to everyone who’s been keeping up with me all this time and pay regular visits.  Happy Early 4th of July!
